You can visit North East Skills at any time. With so much to see we offer special staggered slots for big groups so everyone gets a chance to try the interactive features. We recommend visiting the event for approximately two hours.

    Loads of the companies here want you to get involved in their demonstrations and activities. Many of them are running competitions so you can have fun and try to win some great prizes.

    Have you got the X Factor?
    Newcastle College will have an audience participation music competition; visitors can see if they can impress the judges with their hidden talents! Maybe you are super fit and fancy the sports challenge before indulging yourself making delicious confectionery and chocolate? If pampering is more your style visit their nail bar whilst checking out the latest fashions and hairstyles.

    Dig deep
    Can you find the oil and gas deposits deep inside the Earth? Visit OPITO - The Oil & Gas Academy stand and see if you can find pockets of oil and gas in a clear cross-section of the earth. Find it, capture it, drill it and put it in barrels – sounds simple but have you got what it takes to be an oil baron and make your fortune?

    Climb to the top of your career
    The Army offers a range of career paths and visitors can find out how to get to the top of their career by scaling the climbing wall or finding their way through the different options in the inflatable assault course. Soldiers will be on hand to answer careers questions from joining the technical and logistical corps to medical and dental.

    A career in horseracing?
    You can saddle up and ride to the winning post with Careers in Racing. With loads of interesting stuff about careers in the horseracing industry you can find out if you’ve got what it takes be a jockey.



    Take the ride of your life
    Race across Newcastle and Gateshead in the virtual ride of your life with Gateshead College’s driving simulators, then picture yourself driving the real thing with their racing car. For more virtual thrills you can try playing the games designed and produced by students on the Games Design and IT courses.

    Taste test
    New College Durham’s students will be showing off their cooking skills and you get to taste the results! You can also try their icing competition and see if you can create culinary masterpieces. If you want to try something different you can pick up great painting and decorating tips with their construction students, decorating is a skill everyone needs at sometime in their lives!

    Serve up a success
    Both Protocol Skills and People 1st and UKSP work to promote the very best hospitality training and skills and at North East Skills you get a chance to taste food being prepared by Protocol Skills assessors in their taste challenge. You can then get virtual with People 1st and UKSP’s by trying to win a Nintendo Wii and playing their interactive game using your memory and skills to help their waiter and chef find food and drink hidden in the virtual kitchen.

    Healthy start
    Do you know where all your organs fit in your body? Visit the University of Southampton School of Health Sciences and you can test your knowledge of your insides by putting the removable organs in the torso and completing the human jigsaw. You can then find out about the nursing, midwifery and other medical courses they offer.

    Building the future
    Can you build a tower with excellent green credentials worth over £1.5 million but less than £2 million in less than 10 minutes? Visit the RICS North East stand and you can try! The giant construction challenge will help you find out more about land, property and construction careers.

    Experiment with your career
    Pharmaceutical giant sanofi-aventis produce billions of tablets every year, at North East Skills they will give you a chance to experiment with your career and get hands on with three different experiments. You’ll have a chance to make a lava lamp, a cup and nut pendulum and solid custard – just like the school canteen!

    Counting the ways to success
    Make your way to accountancy training provider, Kaplan’s stand and you’ll have a chance to take part in their interactive apprenticeship quiz; if you’re a winner you will receive a £5 iTunes voucher. You’ll also have a chance to enter a free prize draw to win a brand new laptop.

    Performances from 2009

    If you need to a take a break from all the great interactive features you can enjoy sparkling performances from students and experts from across the North East region.

    Happening on the performance stage during both open days and the evening opening, there will be something to keep you entertained as the region’s top students show off their performance skills.

    Gateshead College
    Hip hop dance and DJs
    Gateshead College will be combining top student dancers and DJs to produce an original and one off performance. Showcasing hip hop and street dance all the music, dance and choreography has been created by Gateshead College students.

    New College Durham
    Acoustic set of modern classics

    New College Durham students from the BTEC National Diploma Music course will be performing an exciting acoustic set. The 5-piece band will be showcasing various modern classics with vocals and music.

    Newcastle College
    Hit the heights
    - a live performance by students from Newcastle College’s Performance academy - a musical extravaganza of hits from the West End and Broadway.
    Swing time – great songs from the golden age of swing.
    Catwalk show – the latest fashions and hair styles.

    Sage Academy of Performing Arts Ltd
    Music and dance extravaganza
    Full time students of the Sage Academy will be demonstrating some of their talents by performing a range of songs and dance numbers in a variety of styles, from hip hop to musical theatre.
